A moving and vivid poem. Doesn't matter what the game was (that is, soccer, basketball, etc.), a loss is a loss. And there's understanding of that, not some lecture about "you win some and you lose some" or some other saying that glosses over, rather than feels, the son's emotions. For some reason the "along" in the first line makes me think of "alone" too, and the poem is about two people who are both together and alone, probably walking to a car.
